FOREST HILL HOTEL Forest Hill Hotel. f ~6ifiC Grovc. California. G07~ Samuel Sylvan Parsons was born February 22, 1860 in Sweden and at the age of 2 his family brought him to Maine and then to California. As a young man he cut railroad ties in the Santa Cruz Mountains. He moved to Fresno where he started a statewide wholesale produce company, The Hobbs-Parsons Company. He became the company's first President, a position he retained until his death in 1946. He survived typhoid fever and bought out the interest of Hobbs. He cornered the potato market and had offices in Oakland and San Francisco. He had a family home in Palo Alto and in 1906 he started bringing his family to Pacific Grove for summer vacations. In 1912 he purchased a large house at 606 Pine Avenue. The fire station is now at this location. After the demolition of the Pacific Grove Hotel in 1918-1919, Mr. Parsons felt that Pacific Grove needed a first class hotel. The C. I. Weld Company of San Francisco was hired by Mr. Parsons in 1925 to construct the Forest Hill Hotel. Each of the four upper stories had 24 rooms and the building had 98 bedrooms. Two wings were attached to a narrow central East-West structure.
