A PROUD HERITAGE - from page 3 married to Juan Castro, founder of Castroville. Maria de Los Angeles, died at the age of 96, the last of her generation of the Boronda family. Among her 10 children was Francisca who married Willis Abby and moved to Pacific Grove when her daughter Anita was a little over a year old. Growing up in Pacific Grove, where there were wooden sidewalks, was an interesting time for Anita because in addition to the usual childhood playmates and games she had her mother and grandmother. They told many stories of early Monterey and Carmel Valley days, which have recently been recalled by Anita when asked to give informal talks to various groups. Many of these tales were incorporated into "Cathedral in the Sun" and other historical novels by Anne Fisher when Anita was the author's "Girl Friday." She was not only the author's typist but, being bi-lingual, she was able to help with interpreting when necessary. "Mother and 1," Anita recalled, "helped on several autographing parties. We wore Spanish costumes, made yerba buena tea and served fruit empanadas which mother made. She was a wonderful cook and was called on so many times to make enchiladas that she called her kitchen 'Fannie's Kitchen.' In fact, I had many of her recipes published in a little booklet which I called 'Recipes From an Adobe Kitchen.' Mother also cooked the entire dinner when St. Angela's was dedicated." Anita was in the first First Communion class at St. Angela's Church on Central Avenue in 1928. The church was noted for its liturgical art designed by Charlton Fortune. Before it was built, Catholics attended services either in Monterey or in Carmel. The first catechism classes were held at the home of "Mother Finchamp" on 17th Street and Mass was celebrated at the Old Theoso- phical hall. The Central Avenue building has not been used since the new church on Lighthouse was built. Among Anita's most vivid childhood memories is the "Displacement."
