J. F. GOSBEY
J. F. Gosbey was barn in Nova Scotia in 1825 und
learned shoe making at en early age. 1n 1853 he left
Canciditin willt 3rs beli:ind* and camo to Callj ornia by .ay of the
Isthmus of Panama.
He opened a shoe store und built thia comfortable house in
Pacific Grove in 1286.
Upi,urently he was civic mirl ed, gregarious, and a staunch
supporter of the Mothodist Church, for he *as a town council
member from iB92 - 1890, a member Of Goverel lodges,· and he
opened his house to Summer boarders for the various religious
and educational meetings *ha 6 took place all uummer long; the
teachers' ionventions, tr. ·3 mil„112 gers' rotreats, the Camp
meetiligs, the conference of bishops, crid tho bigiest attraction
of all, the Chataqua.
It was a mild local joke in the '9Cs to comment on what
wus being built on to the Gosboy House each winter in preparation
for the next season.
