Over 100 members of the
Church of Jesus Christ of Lat-
ter-Day Saints in Lake Stevens
showed up to collect food on
Saturday, Sept. 13.
The church’s annual Day of
Service, which is held each
September near the anniver-
sary of 9/11, is used to bring
its members closer to their
communities through service.
In years past, members in
Lake Stevens have painted
City Hall, the Permit Cen-
ter, police evidence building,
scrubbed and stained Kids
Oasis, cleaned Machias Cem-
etery, which are just a few of
the local projects they have
completed.
This year they chose to

Roulstone selected by governor to
fill Hope’s seat in 44th district

Doug Roulstone, left; Mark Harmsworth, center; Sam Low, right. All were being considered to fill Rep. Mike Hope’s vacated seat in the
legislature. Roulstone was chosen by the governor to fill the seat until Nov. 25.
Last July, Representative
Mike Hope resigned his seat
in the Washington State Leg-
islature as the House Repre-
sentative for the 44th district.
Due to his absence and the
fact that elections aren’t be-
ing held until November, the
empty seat needed to be filled.
The Washington State Con-
stitution gives the county
council the authority to fill
the empty seat, however, after
interviewing the three can-
didates, Mark Harmsworth,
Sam Low and Doug Roulstone
on Sept. 15, the council failed
to fill the position. That made
it the governor’s responsibil-
ity.
The law requires that vacan-
cies are filled by someone of
the same party that held the
seat. A list of nominees was
forwarded by the Republican
Party.
Roulstone, a former Navy
Captain, was chosen to fill the
seat until the November elec-
tions are certified on Novem-
ber 25.
“Inslee was swayed, in part,
by Roulstone’s interview with
the Snohomish County Coun-
cil. In that interview held on
Sept. 15, Roulstone said that
while another nominee was
the best qualified and the par-
ty’s first choice, ‘If you should
choose me I will work very
hard for the people. I will be
basically non-partisan in how
I work and I’ll do the best I
can,’” it stated in a press re-
lease.
Low, a Lake Stevens City
Councilmember supports the
governor’s choice. “Captain
Roulstone is a great choice
and will do a good job serving
the citizens of the 44th Dis-
trict,” he said.
Councilmember Low was
asked about the process with
the governor.
“It was really pretty simple.
I never actually spoke to the
