Chapter IX- MANZANITA
EP This 1914 photograph shows a panoramic view of Manzanita looking north toward
Laneda Avenue and Neahkahnie Mt. The only existing structures at that time were the
Lanes Hotel and the Kardells Store and Post Office. The fenced farmland middle right,
belonged to Lane. Photo is likely taken from around _______avenue which had a large
sand dune in 1914. (Weister Photo courtesy Evangeline Purcell)
JC 60 Incorporated in 1909, The Necarney City Hydrocarbon
Company, sold shares ($ 1 each) in their oil drilling business. An
oil derrick stood amongst the pines just south of Manzanita, and
though they drilled off and on for over a decade, no significant
amount of oil ever materialized. The chance to “strike it rich” is a
theme that permeates the history of this area. (Courtesy Jerry
Muceus)
JW 24- Many thought that the beeswax found on the beach was a sign of
underground oil. The oil derrick was a fixture for a number of years that
represented the dream of wealth that never materialized. It stood in the
pines about a mile south of Manzanita, near Necarney City, until the late
teens when it was either torn down or collapsed. (Courtesy Jim Webb)
(5th street in Necarney City plating…what would that be today?_
TPM Healy Tent City, also known as Necarney Tent
City, sprung up in the pines about 1 mile south of
Manzanita. A home for oil diggers and vacationers
alike, it is though to have been located on the
Necarney City Road near Cart’m. Iit was abandoned
during the WWI, and had all but disappeared by the
late 1920’s. The figurehead, a full size carving a
woman painted white, is thought to be off one of the
great sailing ships, Emily Reed or Mimi.. (Courtesy Tillamook Pioneer Museum)
OHS 950-#257 A typical “street” scene in a tent city shows each tent had its own wooden
platform, and came equipped with a stove for cooking and heating, cast iron beds,
bedding, pots and pans, and as one advertising brochure put it, “everything that will tend
to make a comfortable house by the sea”.
