RE: 221 Fountain
1st Addition to the Retreat, Block 33, Lots 19.
Dear Steve,
Here is all I can find in our files. You can forward this to the woman from Modesto.
Our maps and tax records show that 221 Fountain was first assessed in 1900. This means
the structure was actually built early in that year, or late in the previous year. The first
owner ofthis structure, according to the County's assessor''s records was T. A. Work.
S. N. Williams had his shop at 573 Lighthouse and he lived at 221 Fountain according to
the 1907 city directory. His domestic (maid) named Jeannette Ollason also lived in the
house at that time. The tax records indicate that someone named E. McWilliams was the
legal owner ofboth 221 and 223 Fountain from 1905 through 1908. I don't know ifthey
are two separate people or if McWilliams dropped the "Mc" to 'americanize' his name to
Williams for the store??? Curious.
I can find nothing in our files concerning the name "Manon", nor can I find any photos of
the house.
I hope the above and the attached is helpful.
Sincerely,
Adam Weiland
