notable California pioneer who at the age of 15 crossed the country in a wagon train. Her parents
were Captain Duncan Dickinson and Isabel McCreary Dickinson. Her father, Captain Dickinson,
was the leader of a train of 96 oxteams and wagons which in 1846 left Missouri for California.
Among them was the ill-fated Donner party, whom Captain Dickinson tried to dissuade from
taking the perilous route over the mountains. The two groups parted ways at Fort Laramie.

After her husband's death, Margaret moved to Pacific Grove around 1887 and had the house at
592 Central (formerly called Grove) built for her and she lived there for awhile. She and her
grown daughter Lola, who was an organ and piano teacher, soon built or acquired a total of seven
houses in the immediate area. I assume they rented out these houses for income. In 1910, all the
property was recorded in the name of Lola only, and Margaret moved to 154 Forest Avenue. On
December 20, 1918, Margaret died in the house at 154 Forest at the age of 86.
She was survived by her son, Frank E. Lawrey of Oakland and two daughters, Lola Belle Lawrey
and Mrs. Beatrice Hollenbeck, who was also quite a property owner in early Pacific Grove.
