Dear Karen:
Your letter of inquiry dated April 5,2009, regarding a plague for 501 Congress Ave. was
researched by the Pacific Grove Heritage Society' s Research Team. A recommendation
for approval was presented to the Heritage Society Board ofDirectors and was approved.
The Board however requested that the plague be placed on the smaller structure, on the
left (see enclosed photo), as it is the original structure. I believe we discussed this
requirement earlier this year.
Tax records indicate that the property was first assessed in 1905, for the original owners
B.S. and M.C. Crouch. A footprint of the home appears on the 1905 Sanborn Map, which
is included for your records. As can be seen, the footprint on the 1905 Sanborn Map
clearly indicates the smaller structure was the only home at that time. A copy ofthe 1926
Sanborn Map indicated that the lot next to the original structure was still an empty lot. It
should be noted although I am sure you know that 501 Congress was 687 Spruce on both
the 1905 and 1926 maps.
The normal turnaround time for completion of a plague is two to three months, depending
on the volume of requests in process. When the plague is completed and ready for pick
up (at the Heritage Society Barn), you will be notified.
Thank you again for your interest in the Pacific Grove Heritage Society.
If you have any further questions please contact the P.G. Heritage Society at (831) 372-
2898.
