Mrs. Lyons Side Two Page 2 And she died at our house. 00 you remember anything about the Barn? You know where our Heritage Societyis down on Laurel? No, I never knew anything about that. You don't remember seeing it when you were a child? No, I don't believe I do. It was built in 1891. Well, that was before I was born, wasn't it? Of course there were a lot of bar ns and stables, so you might not have noticed it as being different from anything else. Do you remember in the 1920's, those were times of general prosperity with Cal Coolidge in office. You lived here in this house in the 208 then didn't you? Do you remember.what it was like living in the 2Os in this community? Did everybody have a job? Well, it seemed that everybody had a job. But, I didn't have anything to compare it with. It had always been good and of course we didn't have all the modern conveniences we do now. You speak of the good old days, and when my daughter was home I washed diapers on the washboard and now they just throw them away. So the good old days and that's what we call them when we celebrate. Well, now I have a car and I didn't have a car- for a long time. When we adopted our little- girl (she was 4 months old), not until I got her did we have a car. My husband had a car for his business, the water company and we were priveleged to use it for certain things, not 9-out of town, but for certain things on the peninsula, but we just didn't have a car. Then when E had one then that was wonderful. Do you remember the gate house at the top of Forest Avenue? That would go into the forest. The entrance to 17 Mile Drive. No, I don't seem to remember that. We always went to the 17 Mile gate. Before the highway went from here to Carmel, the road ended. About how far up did it go before it ended. It went about to the Presidio. Do you remember what was up that way where Safeway is today? Nothing but trees were up there. take the dog up there for a walk either. It was all trees, I used to , and you weren't a bit afraid Does the name William Happ sound familiar? There was a Happ family in Monterey. A lady has asked if we have any infonnation on William Happ who was a gate keeper at the top of Forest Avenue he was her greatuncle. He died around 1916. I don't believe I could tell you that. His brother was a policeman, Gus, in Monterey. That is probably the family I had heard of. Did the mailman deliver the mail here in the 2Os? No, we had to go about ... to the postoffice. It was where the Monterey Savings and Loan is now, on Forest Avenue. So that was there from the 20s to at least 1936 then? It was there when my little girl was 4 or 5 because I remember Dr. Charles Grotto chasing her around the table there. Soeshe is now 54 and she was about 4 then.
