Respondlnit#h#request was Mrs.
Edna Seffoii,: herself a spry 86, who
has lived in Pacific Grove for 73
years.
When Mrs. ; Sefton arrived, Mr.
Brua pulled out of a drawer and pre-
sented to her a fdded stereoscopic
photo of the house at 142 Pacific h,»w-2--
where Stevenson 100 years ago had
visited a fellow Scotsman, the Rev.
William Curry McDougall.
It turned out that Mr. Brua's late
wife, Elsie, had been McDougall's
granddaughter. Handwritten on the
backof thephoto ,was this family no·
tation: "Little cottage in Pacific
Grove built for your grandfather in
1874."
The "cottage" was the same one in
which Mrs. Sefton herself had been
brought up, many years after' the re,
verend's demise.
"My mother came there in 1906 as a
widow with five children," said Mrs.
Sefton, who now lives with her her
sister, Miss'Philoma Goldsworthy, on
Bayview Ave.,.just over the back
fence from their childhood home.
"The meadows stretched from our
house clear to the seashore. Mother
could look out the back door and wave
a tea towel as a signal toustocome
home for lunch.
"And there were so many wild flow-
ers - cream-cups, baby blue eyes,
tidy tips and of course the poppies..."
Happenings such as Mr. Brua's
phone call help the Pacific Grove
Heritage Society put together, bit by
bit, the pieces that will fit into a mo-
saic portraying their city's history.
LEADING off a tour group last Saturday were Dr. David Mills
(/eft), flanked by Jennifer Jordan and her mother, Sandra
Jordan.
