A new Miss Aquafest and the Aquaf- est court were selected and will represent Lake Stevens throughout 2018. Erin Potocsnak is the new Miss Aquafest with Teen Queen Syah King, Junior Queen Dakotah Richards, Pe- tite Queen Kyla Knight, Tiny Queen McKinley Taylor and Community Service Queen Aubrey Barlow. Miss Aquafest is a community service based pageant and en- courages young women to get involved in their community. 2017 royalty received the Presidential Volunteer Service Award at this year’s pageant. Potocsnak selected at Miss Aquafest 2018 April 20, 2018 was the 19th anniversary of the Columbine High School shootings that took the lives of 12 students and one teacher. Students all over the country, including those at Lake Ste- vens High School and Cavelero Mid High School here in Lake Stevens, chose to participate in a walkout to help keep the conversation going regarding school safety. “Our school has been work- ing since the February 14 school shooting at Stoneman Douglas High School to cre- ate this event and to not let the national conversation die about school safety and school violence,” Lake Stevens High School senior and Associated Student Body President Nick Pena said. “The purpose of the rally is to spread positivity and to send a message to our government that our school will not stand for the senseless violence happening across our nation.” Approximately 200 students joined the rally at Lake Ste- Students continue conversation on school safety, unity vens High School alone. Sev- eral students helped create the walkout and spoke to the crowd about several issues. “We started with 13 seconds of silence with 13 empty desks to represent the 12 students and one teacher lost at Colum- bine,” Jocelyn Van der Put, a senior, explained. The message of that day was bigger than gun violence.
