April 20, 2018 was the 19th
anniversary of the Columbine
High School shootings that
took the lives of 12 students
and one teacher.
Students all over the country,
including those at Lake Ste-
vens High School and Cavelero
Mid High School here in Lake
Stevens, chose to participate
in a walkout to help keep the
conversation going regarding
school safety.
“Our school has been work-
ing since the February 14
school shooting at Stoneman
Douglas High School to cre-
ate this event and to not let
the national conversation die
about school safety and school
violence,” Lake Stevens High
School senior and Associated
Student Body President Nick
Pena said. “The purpose of
the rally is to spread positivity
and to send a message to our
government that our school
will not stand for the senseless
violence happening across our
nation.”
Approximately 200 students
joined the rally at Lake Ste-
Students continue conversation on school safety, unity
vens High School alone. Sev-
eral students helped create
the walkout and spoke to the
crowd about several issues.
“We started with 13 seconds
of silence with 13 empty desks
to represent the 12 students
and one teacher lost at Colum-
bine,” Jocelyn Van der Put, a
senior, explained.
The message of that day was
bigger than gun violence. The
students wanted to spread the
word that unity among all of
the students and treating oth-
ers with respect and kindness
can go a long way to keeping
schools safe.
“A lot of these shootings
come from students who feel
lost,” Senior Kendra Otto Von
Askervold said. “Learning to
be kind to each other can go a
long way.”
Otto Von Askervold also re-
marked that because they are
the students going to school
every day, she feels that they
have a huge responsibility to
speak out.
